It considers childhood, ageing, pregnancy, injury, illness, disability, sensory and cognitive differences, and the many temporary or situational limitations people experience.<\/p>\n<p>The approach connects physical environments, products, technologies, systems and services because barriers to participation can arise in any of these places.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"explainer-reading__section\">\n<h3>Five connected mandates<\/h3>\n<p>The Institute operates through education, research, innovation, professional services, and policy, standards and knowledge. These mandates connect teaching with evidence, practical solutions, accessibility services, professional guidance and wider systems change.<\/p>\n<p>Its interdisciplinary work draws on design, architecture, engineering, transportation, computing, health sciences, rehabilitation, hospitality, education, communication, business, public policy and disability studies.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"explainer-reading__section\">\n<h3>Participation with people, not only for them<\/h3>\n<p>The Institute\u2019s work considers people across the lifespan and across diverse bodies, abilities, languages, experiences and relationships with technology.
